When you speak of a watch dog most people are thinking about a Rottweiler or Bullmastiff, not a Chihuahua. This is because many people do not know the difference between a watch dog and a guard dog. A watch dog will alert you if someone has stepped on to your property or if someone is attempting to break into your house. A guard dog will defend you if someone jumps over your fence or tries to break in your house. The guard dog will attack and the watch dog will alert you like a home security system. Having both can be very beneficial, especially if you have a large amount of land surrounding your house. The guard dog outside and the watch dog inside, or vice versa.
A good guard dog will be capable of taking down a fully grown man, whereas a good watch dog is only capable of barking to alert his owners of an intruder. The difference is not that complicated once you think about it, but at a first thought many people don’t realize there is even a difference between the two. Some of the best guard dogs are Tibetan Mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, Chow Chows, Pitbulls, and Rottweilers. Some of the best watch dogs are Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, Pekingese and many other small terrier dogs.
Many guard dogs make great watch dogs as well, so there usually isn’t a need for two different dogs. Chow Chows will bark loud enough to alert you of an intruder; however they will also do their best to defend you when needed. Same with many of the mastiff breeds, they are large enough to attack any person who dares step food into your house without permission. Also, a good guard dog will actually attack someone to defend you if needed, and this usually takes training from a professional.
Guard dogs require more training in general, as many dogs will bark but few will actually attack when something goes down. Professional training is not cheap, but if you can afford it then it’s definitely worth it. Just because your dog is alert and barks when needed does not mean he will actually go through with an attack.
